the best ways to wear yellow

Many people seem to have insecurities about wearing yellow, whereas the stores are full of this color every spring/summer nevertheless. We kind of have a love-hate-relationship with it… and hopefully, I can make you like it a bit more after reading this…

Personally, I always loved yellow because it is such a happy and friendly color. And I did not just want to like it from afar – I wanted to wear it, too. The only problem seemed to be that I have always been quite pale. According to several fashion magazines, wearing something yellow is very unflattering for a skin tone like mine. Do not get me wrong, I do not even want to criticize them for saying that – wearing yellow is difficult to pull off. However, I believe that there is a perfect yellow piece for everyone. Let me help you find yours!

the right yellow shade for you

The key to pulling a yellow outfit off, is to wisely choose the color of it. It is all about the undertones. There is warm-toned yellow – often described as “sun yellow” and there is cool-toned yellow, which has less orange in it and appears to be brighter. A cool-toned shade would be a pastel one for example. Generally, it is always recommended to go with the colors that match your skin´s undertones. Therefore, people with a pale complexion like myself should stick to cool-toned pieces. If you have a darker complexion, warm-toned clothing will look absolutely stunning on you.

Just keep this in mind while going shopping, but do not be afraid to break the rules as well. As you can see, I am not following the advice that I just gave you in the picture above… and I absolutely love the dress! It´s color is very warm and I do not go for that often, but I felt like it matched my hair color very well. So maybe think about that as well, when you are trying to decide whether you can pull a color off or not. Just remember: fashion is supposed to be fun! If you like something – even if it does not apply to “fashion rules” – wear it.

the best ways to combine yellow

A way to slowly get comfortable with including yellow into your closet more, is to search for smaller pieces or even jewelry of that color and combine them with pieces that you feel very comfortable in already. You do not have to rock a monochrome look to incorporate the freshness and happiness into your outfit. Just start off slowly. What I have found is that navy blue looks very nice combined with yellow. Like black, it is a neutral color and goes with almost everything, but it is definitely a bit friendlier.

If you like some yellow piece and you are not quite sure about it, just try to see if it really flatters your skin tone and hair color and if it does, go for it! But if it is a very small piece, you can always incorporate it into a coherent look. ♥
